Beyond Individual Excellence: The Art and Science of Managing People | Bengaluru
Technical expertise can build a formidable career in investment management. But moving into leadership requires more.
Many investment professionals keep working harder, collecting qualifications and waiting for their work to speak for itself. Yet beliefs reinforced over decades can eventually hold them back: respect seniority, avoid conflict, always have the right answer and never draw attention to yourself.
Leadership demands broader judgment, influence without authority, visibility without boasting and the ability to create results through others.
The two sessions will tackle different parts of a familiar challenge: being good at your job is no guarantee that you can lead others.
Morning | Binod Shankar, CFA
From Expertise to Influence
Making Better Decisions, Getting Buy-In and Leading Beyond Your Technical Role
Afternoon | Anjan A.

Building High-Performing Teams Through Coaching, Trust and Accountability

Two complementary sessions with one practical aim: helping technically strong professionals become more effective leaders.

Binod Shankar, CFA
Binod Shankar has worked inside global professional services firms, held a senior finance role at a major real estate developer, and built a business that he later sold. He brings those experiences, and the uncomfortable lessons behind them, into his work as a leadership facilitator, executive coach and author. A Chartered Accountant and CFA charterholder, Binod worked at KPMG, Arthur Andersen and Ernst & Young before becoming Finance Director at Nakheel, the Dubai government property developer. He then co-founded and led Genesis Institute, growing it into the largest CFA preparation provider in the Middle East and Africa before its acquisition by Kaplan. Today, he challenges a belief many finance professionals hold: that being technically excellent should be enough to get ahead. His work tackles what happens when the strongest analysis loses the argument, respect for authority becomes silence, and a capable manager becomes the bottleneck for the entire team. Binod holds the ILM Level 7 qualification in coaching and mentoring and is the author of Let’s Get Real: 42 Tips for the Stuck Manager. He has made more than 200 live appearances talking about financial markets on CNBC and Bloomberg. Outside work, he is a fitness addict, mountaineer, kayaker and long-distance cyclist.
