An experiential gallery session with Rishiraj Sethi, CA, CFA
CFA Society India invites you to an experiential session at Aura Art Gallery, Mumbai, bringing together art appreciation, valuation and the practical considerations of investing in art. Set amidst the artworks themselves, the session will offer members an opportunity to explore the relationship between an artwork’s history, its artistic significance and its financial value.
Led by *Rishiraj Sethi, CA, CFA, the experience will combine an interactive discussion with a **guided walkthrough of both gallery spaces*. As participants view selected works, Rishiraj will introduce the artists behind them, their creative journeys, and the historical and cultural influences reflected in their art. The artworks on display will provide concrete examples through which to understand the qualities that distinguish individual works and influence their appeal to collectors.
These observations will lead into a discussion on *how art is valued*—including the significance of provenance, authenticity, rarity, medium, condition, an artist’s body of work and comparable auction results. Participants will explore how these factors shape value, alongside broader trends in the Indian art market and the opportunities and risks associated with art as an asset class.
The conversation will also cover *building and managing an art collection*, from selecting artworks and conducting due diligence to understanding buying and selling channels, transaction costs and liquidity. It will extend to the importance of documentation and valuation for insurance, taxation and succession planning, connecting the decision to acquire an artwork with the responsibilities of preserving and transferring a collection.
With opportunities for asking questions at the end, the session will help members connect what they see on the gallery walls with the analytical considerations involved in collecting art, assessing value and advising clients.

Rishiraj Sethi co-founded Aura Art in 2008, which is well on its way to become India’s leading Integrated Art House – catalysing collection building (www.auraart.in) and management (www.artinfrasolutions.com). He pursued his CA (all India rank holder) and CFA (US), while working for 11 years with Andersen / EY (1997-2008), in Taxation and Investment Banking. Since then, he has significantly focussed on research, creating awareness of Art as an asset class, documenting and valuing collections and promoting artists of calibre. He is now recognised as a thought leader in the art space, co-authoring publications “The science behind valuing art” (December 2017) and “ArTax – Managing tax risks of artworks” (August 2018) alongwith EY, “ArtIP – Art of creating Intellectual Property” (August 2019) with International Legal Alliance (ILA), reports on “ArTrends” (October 2019 and April 2020), report on “Art Insurance” (December 2021), “Art Law E-Book” alongwith Dentons Link Legal (December 2024) and “Aura Art Digest” (June 2025). He also jointly developed the first-of-its-kind IIMA-AuraArt Indian Art Index (IAIAI), alongwith Prof Prashant Das, Faculty Member, Finance and Accounting, IIMA (launched in November 2022). His entrepreneurial journey has been widely featured and he has won various accolades for professionalising the Indian art market. Besides being involved in various community service projects, his other interests include dancing, singing, writing poetry and Heartfulness meditation.
