CFA Society India is delighted to host Mr.Rishiraj Sethi, CFA for a session on The Science behind Valuing Art
A painting by MF Husain selling a few months back for Rs 118 crore has clearly piqued ones interest in this emerging asset class. It still being a far cry (just 4%) of the value of the highest priced International painting (Rs 2,940 crore for a Leonardo da Vinci) only shows the headroom that Indian art has to grow, as we see emergence of more and more Indian collectors as well as global collectors adding Indian art to their collections. Before deciding on the extent of allocation to this asset class, it is important to understand how art is valued and the underlying trends in the market, to get a perspective on which category of artists will outperform others. Besides, since most wealthy families already have a significant exposure to art and collectibles (and are constantly adding to it), it is important to assist them in valuing these collections, for succession planning, insurance, taxation etc. Art is globally established as an alternate asset class for centuries, with many European families treating art as ‘family silver’ since generations. This trend is likely to catch up in India, with the wealth creation cycle only gaining momentum and an ever increasing interest in ‘investments of passion’.
