Richard Cooper: Why successful spoken communications can’t be soft skill?

Richard Cooper, made a presentation on interesting topic of spoken communications to IAIP members at the Speaker Event on September 13th which was well attended by the members.  Richard highlighted the common dysfunction of communications viz. lack of clear purpose, clear structure, or clear benefit, and too much details or too long a presentation or form of communication. Quoting Zeinab Badawi, a well known BBC presenter, people should speak clearly, martial the thoughts, get to the point quickly, keep arguments simpler and think ahead before speaking. Referring to Charles Tilly’s book “Why?”, he explained how the reasons given could fall into four categories of (1) convention (“my train was late”), (2) stories (explanatory narratives about unfamiliar phenomena or events like 9/11), (3) codes (like legal judgement) and (4) technical accounts (engineer explaining 9/11).
