CFA Society India successfully concluded the 8th Value Investing Pioneers Summit 2024 in Delhi. The summit gathered industry stalwarts to share their insights and inspire new approaches to long-term, value-driven investing. Attendees engaged with seasoned investment professionals and explored actionable strategies for building resilient portfolios grounded in value investing principles.
In her opening address, Arati Porwal, Country Head, India at CFA Institute emphasized the enduring relevance of value investing, stating, “Value investing has always stood for delivering value to clients through discipline, patience, and a commitment to fundamental analysis. To ensure relevance in an evolving financial landscape, it’s essential for us, practitioners to remain at the forefront of best practices while staying grounded in core principles. Summits like these provide a vital platform for us to collaborate, connect, and align our progress.”
The summit kick started with an engaging session led by Mr. Ravi Dharamshi, Founder & CIO, ValueQuest Investment Advisors. Mr. Dharamshi focused on “Harnessing Megatrends: How Industry Tailwinds Shape Long-Term Value.” He highlighted that megatrends are not driven by market sentiments; rather, they are transformative forces that reshape economies, spark innovation, and redefine business models. Spanning 25-30 years, these trends create paradigm shifts, influencing every aspect of life and presenting enduring investment opportunities.
The next session was led by Mr. Sunil Singhania, CFA, Founder, Abakkus Asset Management LLP on “The Multibagger Blueprint: Strategies for Investment Success.” Mr. Singhania emphasized India’s unique potential as a large, fast-growing, and diverse economy, making it fertile ground for multi-bagger opportunities. He shared key characteristics to help identify multi-baggers, illustrating his insights with case studies from different sectors. Mr. Singhania also advised investors to maintain a disciplined long-term approach while making investment decisions.
In the following talk, “Small Seeds, Big Trees: Unlocking the Potential of Compounding” Mr. Pankaj Tibrewal, Founder & CIO, IKIGAI Asset Manager, highlighted the crucial role of a long-term investment horizon, patience, a sound investment framework, and thoughtful portfolio construction in harnessing the power of compounding for wealth creation. Mr. Tibrewal urged investors to build a unique investing style rather than emulating other popular investors, stressing that ethics and integrity are vital for lasting success in investment management profession.
Post lunch, Mr. Rajeev Thakkar, CIO & Director, PPFAS Asset Management, led a thought-provoking session titled “Be (A Little Bit) Fearful When Others Are Greedy?” Mr. Thakkar extensively spoke about common myths including the notion that company growth directly translates to stock price growth and that GDP growth trajectory parallels Equity market growth. He further discussed the evolving dynamics of FPI, FDI, and domestic investor flows, as well as the mismatch between investor expectations and analyst projections. Mr. Thakkar concluded by highlighting three fundamental factors within investors’ control – choice of promoter/management, business quality, and entry valuation.
In the final session of the event, Mr. Kuntal Shah, Partner, Oaklane Capital uncovered the “Art of Selling.” His talk addressed a fundamental question- ‘Do you, as an investor, dictate the selling time, or does the markets decide?’ Mr. Shah noted that selling is often a blind spot for many investors for various emotional and psychological reasons. He emphasized the importance of recognizing that buying and selling are asymmetric decisions, each requiring distinct strategies. Sharing a key insight, Mr. Shah explained that expected returns vary across different market players, cautioning against overconfidence in the market and personal assumptions.
